Sweet Red Cherries
Our sweet cherry varieties have been developed right here in British Columbia at the Summerland Research Station, known as PARC. There, new varieties are developed using good old-fashioned cross pollination. PARC varieties are world famous and display the desirable characteristics that we all enjoy – sweet, large, and crunchy. This is not GMO stuff but rather the result of time tested, tried and true farming.
Our sour cherries are of Hungarian origin and will be familiar to people of European and Persian ancestry. They have an altogether different and much more ‘cherry’ taste. Named for locations in their country of origin, we grow ‘Danube’ and ‘Balaton’ varieties.
Sour cherries are today’s hottest “Super Fruit”. A growing body of science reveals tart cherries, enjoyed as juice, dried, or frozen, have among the highest levels of disease-fighting antioxidants compared to other fruits. They also contain other important nutrients such as betacarotene (19 times as much as as blueberries or strawberries!), vitamins C and E, potassium, magnesium, iron, fiber and folate. Please have a look at the following links to read more on this topic for yourself:
Fans of Rainier cherries love the super sweetness and creamy-yellow flesh with its blush of red on the skin…. truly a beautiful fruit. It is extremely fragile however and bruises easily. Extreme care is taken with its harvest and packing!
Our peaches are picked at a true ‘tree ripened’ stage and packaged VERY carefully so as not to bruise them. When you buy our peaches, you can enjoy the sweetness and flavour right away (but, you will need a napkin to wipe the juice off of your chin).
More Jobst-Hof Fruit
We grow a number of apple varieties – both traditional and modern.
Gotta love those pears! Picked at the right time, they are packed with flavour surprise.
If you have seen them on our table at the markets, these apricots may be small but are they ever sweet and flavourful.
Folks that like nectarines absolutely love them. This ‘bald’ variant of a peach has fantastic crunch.
Italian Prune Plums (not actually plums, I guess). We have two varieties: Early Italian and the original version that ripens about 2 weeks later. Great for those open faced European cakes!
